It's a Wednesday night and I'm in a town not too far from San Antonio.  It's a good hour jaunt from Austin (which I've called home over the last 3 years) but I made the trip to hang out with my good friend and official Gore Noir staff photographer, Obscuri.  Obscuri has been creating amazing  ambient horror music lately and I couldn't wait to hear some of the tracks.  We are sitting in his new "Doom Room" surrounded by his medical collection, listening to some of the music that he's been working on.  Each track he starts up has it's own feel and aesthetic to it.  Each brings it's own imagery to mind and as we listen I'm talking to Obscuri, explaining the visuals that are popping into my mind as the music plays.  It also helps to set the tone as the real human skulls are staring back at us in the Doom Room and the wet specimens lay in their jars.  All of this helped fuel the creativity that Obscuri's music was now invoking.

Obscuri is talking about some of the haunts and bands that he has already started working for and creating his ambient tracks for.  The soundscapes he creates definitely lend themselves to an overall feeling that would work well in a haunted house.  Once we've crawled our way through his project tracks we decided to mess around and create a new track on the spot.  It was interesting being able to watch the creation process and give input to help mold the soundscape.  The piece ended up having a very 70's satanic slasher's house feel to it.  I'll link you to it and more of his music below (the name of the track is "Gates to Hell".  If you have yet to hear any of Obscuri's work definitely check it out and hire him for your movies, your haunt, your batmitzva or whatever you need dark ominous music for.  Enjoy!  (Click here to go to the full soundtrack site for Obscuri)

American Mary

Mary Morgan is not afraid of getting dirty

Even though we're working on 3 magazines at once we still have to take time our of our schedule and unwind.  How do we unwind?  Watching movies of course.  Mostly horror films of course and every once in awhile we are treated with something that was actually worth our time to watch.  Most of the time though we are forced to sit through the same old song and dance and it's like pulling teeth.. but every once in a damn while we find something worth getting behind!

Enter American Mary which is twin directors Jen and Sylvia Soska's second film. (If I'm not mistaken Dead Hooker in a Trunk was the first don't quote me on that though)  The nice thing about the film is it's fresh take on the genre.  Although it's not ground breaking it's got that kind of appeal that you can't bottle or really put your finger on exactly.  We follow Mary as she hacks and slashes through her problems and even though we shouldn't, the Soska's make us sympathize with her.

If I had to describe it as a "If (insert movie name here) and (insert movie name here) had a baby" I'd say it would be a crazy three way baby made from the mixed juices of "I Spit on Your Grave", Dexter, (funny that her last name is Morgan) and "Hostel".  The movie and the Twisted Twins had been generating some buzz throughout the horror crowd so although I usually don't follow the horror herd I swallowed my stubborn-ness and dove into the movie.

Mary is definitely a character that makes you love her, and we were hooked.  She's definitely got what it takes to lure in even the most rigid of horror fans.  You probably will see some horror hipsters out there hating on the movie but truthfully these people probably hate on 98% of everything new that comes out and the only things that will make their horror nerd pecker stand at attention is watching Evil Dead for the billionth time.  If you'd like to give the movie a watch I've linked to a VOD player for you to sit back and enjoy.  Yes you have to pay but part of the proceeds go straight into the Gore Noir coffers and that money is used for hookers and crack so you know your money is going to a good cause.  NOW WATCH!

The Orphan Killer

 

In an era that's being overran by digital blood and effects it's always refreshing to see a film that goes back to the basics and gives us straight up horror.  The Orphan Killer or TOK as most of the fans of the film call it, is a Bloody good slasher horror film that impressed me with it's level of gore.  That's not to say that it relies on the gore as a crutch like some films.  It doesn't just lop off heads just for the sake of being over the top either.  The main character, who the film is named after, is just like you or I. Only difference is he's fucked up in the head at a whole higher level.  Think serial killer meets Michael Myers or Jason Vorhees.  I like how the movie presents us with the back story on TOK and overall I'd say it's a must see.  Did I mention Gore Noir Magazine will feature an interview with Matt Farnsworth the creator and director of TOK?  Oh and that there will be many more photos of the lovely Diane Foster who plays the Heroine Audrey in the film?  Well consider it mentioned!  Look for all that and more in the 6th issue coming in June/July.
