Patreon, Digital VS Print Magazines, Independent Horror

Ally Boobior & Vyrus McDisco Blood Wrestling Photo By Brian Nixon
Hello there ghouls!  Welcome to another blog post from yours truly!  In this addition of Gore Noir Magazine blogs sometimes, we are going to go into Patreon and how it's helping independent artists and media.  At first I was skeptical of the format.  It didn't seem like a good way to reach the masses.  That was until I saw a few friends and artists on Patreon bringing people into their everyday process and in some cases bringing in more that $1k a month to boot.

The way I reasoned with myself to start our own Patreon was this..  Sometimes friends, family, and fans want a way to be involved and updated and they also want to be able to donate towards your dreams.  Why not just buy product you say?  Well what if they already have most of what you're making?  Or what if the art is too expensive to buy a piece every month?  Them donating $5 a month is easier than keeping up on buying product from you on a regular basis.  It's also easy for them as it just comes out of their account without them having to fuss over anything.

So I had sold myself on the idea and now we are a good 4 months in with out Patreon.  You set goals for yourself and your Patrons to help move the whole thing forward and motivate all involved.  I set my first goal at 66 and we quickly hit that..  My second goal, which I now realize was a bit too lofty of a second goal, was $666.  I know I was being cute..  But hey it could happen?  We currently sit at $83 a month which helps us pay some of our processing fees and helps go towards new products.

Issue 15
It's an uphill battle these days creating an independent magazine..  Let alone an independent horror magazine.  Add on top of that, that we are a PRINT magazine and you can see what we are dealing with.  My goal was always to move slow and not get too big for our own britches.  You can see some magazines like Fangoria having a problem with this very issue.  It would be far too easy to go full digital magazine every month but I think print is something that I'll never give up on.  What magazine can put out a coffin shaped issue if it's just digital?  Every magazine right?  But can you see it at stores and happen upon it at a friends house on their coffee table or by their toilet?  Didn't think so..

Am I silly to want to keep Gore Noir Magazine a print magazine?  Probably..  It's an uphill battle..  Right now we are in limbo with our 15th issue, which is almost done and ready to go, but we have yet to raise the money for printing costs.   We usually do a pre-order for each issue to help offset print costs and foot the bill.  As we have done with this one and I thank everyone who's helped by sharing the link to get this issue printed.  I promise that we won't be like Fangoria and go digital only and promise a print issue for over a year only to not come through.

February Patreon Giveaway Package
One of the things we've done with our Patreon is to do monthly giveaways to help give back to the fans.  It's a community effort to get something like this rolling so we're able to get lots of stickers, artworks, toys, posters, pins, buttons, hats, shirts, and everything else under the sun from awesome people like you and put together a package and send it to one lucky Patreon Patron that's pledged $5 or more.  Our first giveaway WAS TREMENDOUS!  We hope to bring more and more product into the fold and you can skip to the bottom to find our address to send product to.  We will snap a photo of the products for social media posting (advertising for you!) and time permitting we do a video of all the awesome stuff we have for our Patreon giveaway and thank all those who sent in the items.

I'm always trying to think of new ways to keep in touch with our fan base and if you message us through Facebook or Instagram, or any media to be honest, I try to respond and give you all the attention that is needed.  I feel this is lacking with most magazines.  I try to go on all of the podcasts, the local TV shows, to answer the interview questions, and talk with all of the people that come by our vending booth at conventions and gigs.  I love hearing the feedback and it helps keep the train moving down the track.  It's our motivation.

Lastly I'd just like to thank all of the people that have supported us either directly, by purchasing products, coming to our events, and becoming a patron, or indirectly, by sharing our posts, telling your friends about us and giving us words of encouragement.  We are a small independent horror magazine that loves being a part of the horror culture and making it as bloody as possible!

BLOODLUST

Our 2nd Bloodlust event entitled Devil's Night went off without a hitch!  Well except one thing..  FLASHFLOODS!  Despite the flashflood warnings all of the devilish folks came out and drank till they couldn't drink anymore and watched as Drew Blood and the Pickled Punks skewered themselves and walked up and down blades..  They took in the sites that Rockin Bones Clothing put on stage for us..  Which was amazingly hot ladies showing off their new clothing designs for our eyes only.  They also watched Gaige (the hostess for the night) eat fire and saw the lovely ladies wrestle in our own concoction of blood.  We even had a few folks taste the blood..  AFTER the wrestling.  How'd it taste?

This of course was all set to the soundtrack of the night being played by DJ Obscuri, who braved the flashfloods and rowed his boat.. I mean drove his car down from Dallas.  The vendors were amazing as well showing off some awesome horror art for us.  There was Hellcat Hardwear, El Sick String, and Joe Casanova all displaying their sick creations.

Did you miss out on this event?  Wanted to make it but just couldn't?  The next event is Sunday November 24th and will be taking place at Infest (5th & Lavaca) in Austin TX.  This event is entitled..  Bloodlust of the Undead and will have a zombie/deadite/undead theme.  Come dressed as a zombie, a deadite, or an undead ghoul to be entered into the costume contest.  Or maybe you want to show off your voracious appetite and enter the jello brain eating contest?  Are you a lady and want to roll around in zombie blood muck?  Maybe you just want to feast your eyes on some sideshow and burlesque put on by Le Strange Sideshow?  We've got you covered..  in blood..  Photos of the devils night show can be found on the wall here:  https://www.facebook.com/events/181603535356145/  and you can hit "going" to the bloodlust of the undead event here:  https://www.facebook.com/events/460412654074653

Bloody Boobs, Things, and Stuff

Now that I've got your attention I'm just going to show you a bunch of pictures and say some random shit about them.  Well shit..  That's pretty much what blogging is anyway right?  Half the time they aren't even telling you anything interesting anyway.  You've probably even stopped reading by now and have gone all A.D.D. on me and are just looking at the lovely ladies and the shitty art.  It's okay that's probably what I would have done as well.

Top left you'll see my photoshopping skills in action as I've compiled all 4 of the covers of the next 3 magazines..  3 magazines and 4 covers?  What the fuck?  Well the sick and depraved issue will have 2 covers (first 2) and then the 3rd one over is the 8th issue...  Everyone stare at the loveliness of the Godmachine cover..  Okay now the next one there is Black and White.  No your screen is fine it's actually black and white and will be in a "zine" format.  That means we'll be cutting and pasting to our hearts delight and giving you that freshly pasted feel to it.

Now to the left you'll see my ahmazin' artin skills at work.  This is the beginnings of a "metal" logo that I'm working on and will be featured on an alternative cover of the magazine..  Which issue you ask?  Fuck if I know..  Will there be shirts you ask?  Of fucking course!  Lots of lime green and white will be featured in the logo and subsequent art that will come with it.  The art I'm going to pass off to a better artist but I'm loving working on the logo itself.  *burp*  Well maybe we'll do a red version as well.  Make it look all bloody and shit..  Cause really you guys come here for the blood and boobs and not much else right?  Right?  Well shit..  That's fine..

So last but not least we had our Blood Lust event not too long ago and I'd like to thank Gaige and Suzi Rubbish for helping put this together!  I'd also like to thank Marcy Horror for coming out and blood wrestling for us!  She's going to be our first ever Gore Noir Girl and will be featured in issue 8.  There were so many awesome blood wrestlers that I would run out of space here in my ramblings to thank them all but you can see and "get to know" them in our upcoming Blood Lust DVD which will be out in about 3 months time.  Might take longer so don't quote me on that because we won't rush something just to put it out there.  We want it to be it's bloody best!  Below is an image of Marcy Horror and Crakka Jappa getting down in our pool of blood that ended up hemorrhaging blood..  The ladies were getting down like that!  Thanks SAcounterculture.com for coming and interviewing us and shooting photos!

Blood Lust and Texas Frightmare

With both Texas Frightmare and our Blood Lust San Antonio event coming up things are a bit stressful here at Gore Noir HQ.  Pile on top of that our move to a new spot and I'm pretty lucky to have any hair on my head right now.  We won't start talking about the greys that are coming in..

First let's talk about Blood Lust.  I just finished a mock up of the DVD case which will probably change a bit but we'll be bringing this bad boy wrapped around a dummy DVD box so people can get a feel for the packaging and purchase a presale if they'd like.  Presales will start at Texas Frightmare and will continue until a month before the DVD release.

The DVD won't be out until probably September or October so we have a ways out as we'll be putting some nice production value into the editing and whatnot.  Expect lots of bloody goodness in this sweet DVD!

Our table at Texas Frightmare will be in the same room as the folks from Walking Dead so when you go check out Norman Reedus (who will hopefully come by our booth) make sure you remember to come by our table and say hi, grab some stickers, and some magazines!  We'll be giving away free posters with all magazine purchases.

Blood, blood, and more blood!

We had fun filming our blood wrestling to be aired in a month or so on Creepy Kofy Movie Time. We always have fun ending out their taping with a bang and some blood! The ladies were awesome and because of some flakes we had a 3 lady battle royal instead of a multi-episode tournament.. Next season we are going to bring the bloody pain! The claws came out during the blood wrestling and lots of sticky fun was had as always! If anyone wants Gore Noir Mag to bring blood wrestling to their event just email is and we can talk about costs. info@gorenoir.com

I have the first reviews chosen so get in front for the next.I want to get people published that would never be in a magazine due to content. Lets get nasty"

Photo: Jm Grimm Model: Layla Marie
CONFIRMED: First stop will be San Francisco January 12th Submission Gallery

If you've been around since the beginning times of Gore Noir you'll know that we like to have a little fun.  And by little fun I mean drinking tall cans of PBR, watching a few bands play, and having some scantily clad ladies roll around in blood.  In the beginning the blood wasn't all that great looking.  We were new at it.  So sue us.  Not to toot my own horn but the blood is now spot on!  We had people who were tuned in for Creepy Kofy Movie Time about to puke.  Ya I was pretty proud of that.  Click the link for the newest batch of blood:

So there's that.

Blood Booze Tattoos Bruises all that shit and more..  Want involved?  Wanna sponsor a show?  Want blood all over you and to be featured in a Gore Noir DVD? GORE noir Mag Release party!

The magazine release party was a blast!  We had close to 100 people show up and partake in the awesome bands that left our eardrums thoroughly fucked and bloody and the blood wrestling that coated the back room of the venue in a film of authentic fake veinious excretion.  Needless to say the venue wasn't pleased although we did line their pockets with our hard earned beer money.  The blood will definitely be thicker next time around and the venue that allows us to bleed out all over their floors.  I've been gathering up talented people for our next couple issues and let me be the first (won't be the last) to say that the new issues are going to be bloody fucking awesome! You definitely won't want to miss out!  Click the lil link above and subscribe or order the first mag of bloody goodness!
